Chlorine dioxide is a chemical compound with the formula ClO₂ that exists as yellowish-green gas above 11 °C, a reddish-brown liquid between 11 °C and −59 °C. It is usually handled as an aqueous solution (water). It has a variety of antimicrobial uses, including disinfecting drinking water. When added to drinking water, it helps destroy bacteria, viruses and some types of parasites that can make people sick. According to the CDC, chlorine dioxide is added to drinking water to protect people from harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. EPA recognises chlorine dioxide use as a drinking water disinfectant, and it is included in WHO’s Guidelines for Drinking-water quality.
